The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is a statutory body responsible for protecting the environment in Ireland. They regulate and police activities that might otherwise cause pollution. Their priorities are protecting the Irish environment and ensuring that development is sustainable.

The EPA is an independent public body established in July 1993 under the Environmental Protection Agency Act, 1992. Its sponsor in Government is the Department of the
Environment, Heritage and Local Government.

The Water Services Act 2007, Section 70, places a duty of care on the owner of a premises. Only a sludge removal contractor who holds a valid Waste Collection Permit (such as can be used to desludge.

You should also keep your receipt from the contractor for 5 years. Non-compliance with the duty of care requirement is an offence, for which penalties of up to €5,000 and up to 3 months imprisonment on summary conviction, can be imposed.
